How Do Pianos Work?

I was wondering how pianos work.
When you press down a key on the piano, the key is connected to a hammer. It's a different kind of hammer. Not the kind that nails stuff into wood. The hammer on the piano hits a string to make noise.

Click on this link for a video of how pianos work.

I like to play the piano. I like to play a song called Santa's Sleigh.

Do you have any questions about pianos? Please write them in the comments.

  1. Sonny,

Great post. What are the strings of a piano made of? What are the hammers made of?

    1. this is Sonny. Piano wire is made of a special kind of steel. The hammers are made of wood, and they're covered with a type of felt.

  2. I love your curiosity, Sonny. I wonder how the length of piano strings affects the sound. Do you know?

    1. this is Sonny. When you press a low note on the piano, it vibrates slow. it is a long, fat string. if you press a high note on the piano, it's a skinnier string, and it's shorter, and it's also stretched tighter.

  3. Sonny, I liked your blog about how pianos work. What are the pedals for? How do they work?

  4. Sonny, I'm excited to hear you play Santa's Sleigh after we move to Utah this summer! Isn't it wonderful that someone was inspired to create a piano!
